Food Supplements Are Key To Building Muscle

Nutrition plays a vital role in building muscle. To get the most out of your weight training, you have to consume the right nutrients at the right time. Proper supplementation will help you skyrocket your gains.

The Iron Guru, Vince Gironda, known for training pro bodybuilders like the first Mr. Olympia, Larry Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger, used to say that bodybuilding is 85 percent nutrition. He was known for placing his muscle building students on diets that contained many different supplements, from amino acids, to dessicated liver tablets, and other anabolic-effecting nutrients, as well as dozens of eggs and gallons of milk.

Nowadays, there are so many supplements at your local GNC that it's very difficult to wade through all of them. And the claims they make are suspect, at best.

I recommend sticking to the "knowns" like the amino acids arginine and ornithine, the liver tablets, a good protein supplement that has low carbs and low to no sugar (I especially like MetRx), as well as what some might call mega doses of vitamins and minerals. Most nutrients are in fact non-toxic. Even the so-called "toxic" nutrients, the fat-soluble ones like vitamin E, are very hard to take in toxic quantities.

All that said, it's important to focus on laying a solid foundation for muscle growth by ingesting the right nutrients at the right times in your training cycle and then pouring on the anabolic effects with some growth enhancers.

Besides the variety of supplements is the cost. Nutritional supplements are expensive. And you can generally guage the cost of a supplement based on the snazzy graphics on the package. I'm not kidding. Just visit your local health food store and you'll see what I'm talking about.

However, there is hope for the aspiring bodybuilder. In the "olden days," professional and promising amateur bodybuilders got sponsorships, which meant they either got direct money or supplements for free from the big supplement manufacturers, in return for "endorsing" the product. Today, muscle builders and strength athletes can manufacture their own supplements, using inexpensive ingredients, often times saving over 90 percent on the cost of a retail, jazzed up supplement package.

Whichever path you take, know that without supplements, you will not gain the muscle or lose the fat you need to build the physique you want. Supplements can break the bank, but they can also make the muscle you want. Choose your path wisely.
